The Rosemount 8600 Series from Emerson is a robust vortex flow meter engineered for accurate and repeatable measurement of liquids, gases, and steam. It’s widely used in utility systems, energy management, and process control environments where reliability, minimal maintenance, and digital communication are essential.

 

How It Works (Operating Principle)

The 8600 uses the vortex shedding principle:
As a fluid flow past a bluff body (shedder bar) in the meter, vortices are shed alternately from each side. The frequency of these vortices is directly proportional to the flow rate. A piezoelectric sensor detects the vortices and converts the signal into a digital flow reading.

Installation Guidelines

  • Straight Run Requirements: Typically 10 pipe diameters (upstream) and 5 diameters (downstream). Reducer versions reduce straight run needs.
  • Orientation: Horizontal, vertical, or inclined installation.
  • Remote Mount Option: Transmitter electronics can be located up to 23 meters (75 ft) away from the sensor body.
