Product Description

What is it?

The Proline Promag P 10 is a magnetic (electromagnetic) flowmeter designed for liquid flow measurement in industrial process applications. It uses the electromagnetic principle to measure volumetric flow of conductive liquids.
Being part of the “Promag P” product line, it is aimed at process applications (especially chemical, corrosive liquids) rather than purely hygienic or water-only uses.

How it works (Principle of operation)

  • The sensor section has a measuring tube through which the conductive liquid flows.
  • A magnetic field is generated across the flow path; as the liquid flows, a voltage proportional to flow velocity is induced (Faraday’s Law).
  • Electrodes mounted in the flow tube pick up this induced voltage.
  • The transmitter converts it to a flow rate (volume) signal.
  • Because the measurement is based on velocity and cross sectional area, this type of meter is largely independent of fluid density, pressure, temperature and viscosity (within constraints).

This makes electromagnetic flowmeters highly suitable for a range of liquids where other meter types may struggle.

Key Specifications & Features

Here are some of the important specs and features of the Promag P 10:

Specifications

  • Measurement accuracy (standard): ±0.5 % of reading ± 1 mm/s. Optionally ±0.2 % of reading ± 2 mm/s.
  • Measuring range (volume flow): from about 4 dm³/min (≈ 1 gal/min) up to 9 600 m³/h (≈ 44 000 gal/min) for large sizes.
  • Medium / fluid temperature range:
    • Liner PFA: –20 °C to +150 °C (–4 °F to +302 °F)
    • Liner PTFE: –40 °C to +130 °C (–40 °F to +266 °F)
  • Maximum process pressure: up to PN 40, Class 300, 20K in standard construction.
  • Wetted materials: liner made of PFA or PTFE; electrodes: e.g., stainless steel 316L (1.4435), Alloy C22, tantalum, platinum or titanium.
  • Nominal diameter size range: up to DN 600 (24″) in the sensor version.

Features & Benefits

  • Bidirectional measurement: can measure flow in both directions (if configured) since principle is velocity-based.
  • No moving parts → low maintenance.
  • Low pressure drop: the sensor does not constrict the flow cross-section (no orifice or throttle), so minimal added pressure loss.
  • Good material flexibility: able to handle corrosive liquids due to choice of liner and electrode materials.
  • Smart usability / diagnostics: includes features such as the “Heartbeat Technology” (for self-diagnostics, verification) and operation via mobile app (SmartBlue) or touchscreen display.
  • Communication / integration: supports HART, Modbus RS485 protocols.
  • Explosion/hazardous-area approvals: available in versions with Ex approvals for hazardous areas.

Typical Applications

Given its design and features, Promag P 10 is suited for:

  • Chemical process industry: measuring corrosive or aggressive liquids where materials compatibility matters.
  • Process industries in general: wherever liquids are conductive (a requirement for electromagnetic flow measurement) and density/viscosity/temperature vary.
  • Applications that require robust, low-maintenance flow measurement with minimal insertion loss in the pipe.
  • Situations where remote/transmitter versions and integration into automation systems (HART, Modbus) are required.

It may be less suited for: non-conductive fluids (since EM flowmeters need conductive media), small line sizes below its specified minimum, very high temperature or pressure beyond its design, or highly abrasive fluids unless special materials are chosen.

What to Consider when Specifying / Installing

When selecting and installing a Promag P 10 flowmeter, keep in mind the following:

  • Media conductivity: Ensure the fluid has sufficient conductivity for the electromagnetic principle to work (typical requirement in EM flowmeters).
  • Liner and electrode material selection: Choose liner (PTFE or PFA) and electrode material based on the chemical compatibility of the fluid and temperature.
  • Pipe size (DN) and flow range: Select the correct nominal diameter to match process pipework and expected flow rates – oversizing can reduce accuracy; undersizing may restrict flow or exceed recommended velocity.
  • Process conditions: Maximum temperature, pressure, presence of solids or slurry, fluid density or viscosity variations, installation environment (hazardous area).
  • Installation straight-run / grounding: Although EM meters are less sensitive to some conditions than others, proper installation (grounding, pipe straight runs, absence of strong magnetic fields) still matters.
  • Communication / control integration: If you require HART, Modbus, or remote display/app operation, ensure the correct transmitter variant is chosen.
  • Verification / calibration: Utilize the built-in diagnostic features (Heartbeat Technology) and ensure periodic verification if required by your quality/control regimes.
  • Maintenance & service accessibility: Even though it is low maintenance, consider access for inspection, cleaning (if solids present), and replacement if needed.
